These bikes are perfect for city bike riding like commuting to work, running errands or just going on a ride around the city.  Because they have so much road bike DNA in them, flat bar road bikes are perfect for long and fast rides too.  Many users love their versatility and find riding much more rewarding and financially beneficial than driving their cars.

While all bikes vary somewhat, and more so in a newer category like this, flat bar road bikes usually have these features in common:

Riding Position:  The flat handlebars on these bikes allow the rider to sit more upright.  This is opposed to the lower sitting and curved handlebars of a traditional road bike, which force the rider into a more prostrate position to help with aero dynamics.

Frame:  The frame on these bikes is all road racer; super lightweight, usually made with high-grade materials.  Frames for these bikes could be made from high-grade aluminum, titanium, chromyl steel or carbon fiber composites.

No Suspension:  Like a road bike, there is no suspension on these bikes.

700c Wheels:  Built for speed and aerodynamics, these large wheels will get the job done if you're looking to get somewhere quick.

Adaptable Design:  The flat road bikes are designed to have space for larger wheels, fender and accessories like luggage racks that traditional road bike don't.  This gives you the option to decide how much you're going to put on your bike or how light you're going to keep it.

Some road bikers argue that the flat bar design is more comfortable but takes away the benefits of the drop handle bar.  Drop bars are better for chest open climbing techniques according to many experts.  Flat bars also take away most of the available hand positions that drop bars have.  Bar ends can also be added to these bikes to give you more grip positions, though to rectify this.

The frame is also a negative for many riders.  Even if you're not doing park or street style riding, you're still going to run into the occasional obstacle or situation on your flat bar road bike where a strong frame is needed.  With these models you don't get as much strength as you would with a hybrid bike and their frames are unlike those of mountain bikes.  Basically, don't think you can tackle any jumps on these bikes.  This category of bikes also lacks suspension, so you're in for a stiffer ride with more abuse being put on your body than your bike can absorb.

While these bikes are based on road bikes and have their frame geometries, many companies don't make high-end versions of these models.  For some reason the market can't seem to support a top of the line bike with flat bars.  Unfortunately, this means that a lot of research and development is not put into these bikes and they will continue to get the R&D hand-me-downs from their pure road bike cousins.

While there are many great models, many lack the technology and materials put into road bikes that they are based on.  Perhaps as the market grows there will be more money, research and innovation poured into these models.

While many companies sell flat bar road bikes that are specifically designed to fit that category, you can also take flat bars and put them on any existing road bike.  This gives you the option of converting your race bike for more comfortable riding when you're not wearing a number on your shirt.

But by making sure that the woman's bike has shorter stems, shorter cranks, smaller handlebars, and a wider saddle. There are even women's road bikes out there that have a set tube angle that is steeper and a taller head tube, which makes riding a lot easier. These adjustments, while they may seem silly and unnecessary to some people, have a lot of reasoning behind them.

The wider saddle for the woman's road bike will ensure that there is no tissue damage by not having a sit that fully accommodates the sit bones of a woman. The brakes and shifters are adjusted to fit smaller hands so that it is easier for the woman to control the bike. And the shorter bars that are easier to reach help to make sure that there is not too much strain placed on the arms and back of the woman in the attempt to ride the road bike.

Maybe though, you still do not feel as though these generic women's bikes are going to work for you. If you have a little bit of money and time to spend then you can always ordered a custom made women's designed road bike. The bike will be designed to fit around you, your particular riding style, and your personal tastes. This means that you will really be able to become one with the bike and you will be able to ride for much longer periods of time without becoming strained.

So now that you are aware of the differences between a woman's specific road bike and a regular designed bike that was made with the male gender in mind, why would you go with anything else? You have not only your posture to consider but also your muscles as well. Make sure that you are protecting your body and making sure that you will be able to enjoy all of your bike rides from now on. Either pick up a regular women's designed road bike or design your own and begin to truly enjoy riding.

3.  Cyclo cross This is a cross between road and mountain biking. These riders have to go over obstacles, cross through rivers, and race on and off the course.

4.  Dirt jumping Dirt jumping involves jumping the bike over large man made dirt jumps then doing tricks while they are in the air.  These jumps are normally close together so riders can go over six or more jumps in one run, gaining a flow to give them more  speed for bigger jumps.

5.  Downhill Downhill mountain biking involves racing downhill as fast as possible.  This type of riding is very intense and extreme, offering riders the chance  for ultimate thrills and excitement.

6.  Freeride Free riding involves finding the perfect line down the mountain using all of the terrain to express yourself.  These competitions are very popular,  as riders can express themselves any way they see fit.

7.  Single speed No to be confused with fixed gears, this is a form of cross country biking that's done using a bike with only one gear and fewer components.  The idea with single speed is simplicity.  The straight chain line will provide efficient pedaling, and the lack of components mean less mechanical  problems and a lighter bike.

8.  Street and urban This type of riding involves riding in urban areas, ledges, and other types of man made obstacles.   Riders of street and urban biking will do tricks as well, such as stalls and grinds.

9.  Trails  Trials are considered an aspect of mountain biking,  although the bikes used look nothing like mountain bikes.  They use 20 or 26 inch wheels and sport  small, low frames.  Trail riders will hop and  jump their bikes over obstacles, which requires an extreme amount of balance and concentration.
